Netflix chief exec Ted Sarandos says that Squid Game will "absolutely" be returning for new episodes.

Netflix chief executive Ted Sarandos has confirmed that Squid Game will return for a second season.

The gruesome drama was released worldwide in September last year and quickly grew in popularity to become the most-watched series in the history of Netflix.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has previously revealed that he has been discussing a second - and even third - season of the show with the streaming service, although no definitive announcement has yet been made.

Speaking on an investor call on Thursday, however, Sarandos confirmed that the show would "absolutely" be returning, confidently declaring: "The Squid Game universe has just begun."

Details of when the new season will be filmed and released have yet to be revealed, although Netflix is expected to push for production to get underway as soon as possible.
