Heartstopper star Kit Connor has admitted that he 'wasn't ready' to disclose his sexuality last year and was left "slightly disappointed" by the experience.
The 19-year-old shot to fame a year ago for his role as Nick Nelson, a teenage schoolboy discovering his bisexuality, on the acclaimed LGBTQ+ Netflix series.
Connor had not spoken about his own sexuality in public but was repeatedly accused of 'queerbaiting' by some fans, who believed that he was straight but deliberately leaving his sexuality ambiguous.
Eventually the actor decided to come out as bisexual amid the pressure, writing on Twitter: "i'm bi. congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. i think some of you missed the point of the show. bye"
Speaking to Vogue about his tweet, he recalled: "I just felt like it wasn't something I was ready to talk about. I wasn't angry. I was just slightly disappointed by this reaction."
"I think 'forced' isn't the right word I would use, but I would say that I would have preferred to do it another way," he continued. "I also don't know if I would have ever done it. But at the end of the day I don't regret it. In many ways it was really empowering."
Heartstopper's second season drops on Netflix on August 3.
