Anna Sorokin, the fake heiress who inspired the Netflix drama Inventing Anna, has avoided being deported from the US for now.
The 31-year-old was jailed in 2019 having been accused of scamming multiple institutions and individuals out of hundreds of thousands of dollars while posing as a wealthy German heiress called Anna Delvey.
Sorokin was freed on parole in February 2021 but just weeks later she was rearrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying her visa, a decision she is appealing.
According to her lawyers, ICE had been planning to deport her from the US to Frankfurt in Germany on Monday night but they managed to successfully get a stay of the deportation.
"Until we get a ruling from the appeal to stay the deportation, there won't be much else to report," lawyer Manny Arora told The New York Post.
"I spoke to Anna this morning. She was confused and a little concerned. It's hard (for her) to understand all the bureaucracy, especially given she's locked up in jail for 20-plus hours a day and doesn't have control.
"When you don't know what your future holds, when you can't call people when you want to to get information, it makes you anxious and frustrated. She's staying positive, but it's hard on her."
Sorokin has already signed a deal for her own reality TV show when she is released, while she is also believed to be working on a book and a podcast.
