Qais Ashfaq: "I sent out a statement"

Team England boxer Qais Ashfaq claims that he "sent out a statement" by beating Scotland's Joe Ham in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games.

Team England boxer Qais Ashfaq believes that he "sent out a statement" by beating Scotland's Joe Ham in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.

Ashfaq is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal in the Bantamweight section, but he has insisted that his eyes are firmly on gold.

"Yeah I sent out a statement. I have boxed him four times now and beat him three times. I feel like I sent out a statement by beating him comfortably in his hometown," he told Sports Mole.

"Coming into the ring I wasn't even thinking about the bronze medal, as long as you keep your head in the game and keep training hard and get the tactics right then I can change the colour of the medal."

Ashfaq's semi-final opponent is Kenyan Benson Gicharu Njangiru.
