Result: Record-breaking Nick Miller wins hammer throw gold at Commonwealth Games

Team England's Nick Miller breaks a 12-year-old Commonwealth Games record to claim gold in the men's hammer throw on the Gold Coast.

Team England's Nick Miller has broken the Commonwealth Games record en route to winning the gold medal in the hammer throw on the Gold Coast this afternoon.

The 24-year-old produced a mammoth fourth throw of 80.26m to top the podium at Carrara Stadium, becoming the first person in Commonwealth history to have broken the 80-metre mark.

The previous Games record of 77.53m had stood since 2006, but Miller would have also broken that with his fifth throw during a dominant display on the opening day of athletics action.

Miller - whose mark is also a new national record - finished comfortably clear of Australia's Matty Denny and Scotland's Mark Dry, who picked up silver and bronze respectively.

Denny's best throw was measured at 74.88m - a personal best - whereas Dry produced a season's best of 73.12m to win bronze for the second consecutive Games.

England's Taylor Campbell finished in fifth place, meanwhile, producing a best throw of 72.03m.
