Great Britain's Johanna Konta crashes out in the quarter-finals of the Rio Olympics courtesy of a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Angelique Kerber.

Great Britain's Johanna Konta has been dumped out of the Rio Olympics in the quarter-finals courtesy of a straight-sets defeat to Angelique Kerber.

It took the German a little over an hour to book her place in the semi-finals with a 6-1 6-2 triumph, ending Konta's dreams of an Olympic medal in Brazil.

It was clear early on that Konta could be in for a tough evening when a mammoth opening game ended with Kerber taking her third break point and moving into the lead.

The Brit did get on the board in her next service game, but Kerber reeled off the next five games in a row to clinch the opening set 6-1.

Konta raised hopes of a fightback by breaking in the very first game of the second set, but Kerber soon regained control and won four games in a row to move to the brink of victory.

Konta did manage to stop the rot with her first hold of the second set, but Kerber won the final two games to wrap up a convincing victory.
