Lewis Hamilton clinches a comfortable victory in the Spanish Grand Prix to increase his championship lead ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Lewis Hamilton has extended his lead at the top of the Formula 1 championship table thanks to a dominant victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The Briton was well ahead of the chasing pack throughout a one-sided race which included a heavy first-lap crash, two caution periods and a number of spins and collisions.

Romain Grosjean, Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg were all involved in the early accident while Esteban Ocon, Kimi Raikkonen and Stoffel Vandoorne also retired in an eventful contest.

Valtteri Bottas's second-place finish confirmed a Mercedes one-two, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen clipped Lance Stroll's Williams and, with 20 laps to go, sustained front wing damage en route to third.

Vettel, having jumped Bottas off the line, was running second as late as lap 41 but dropped to fourth when a second stop for fresh tyres behind a Virtual Safety Car backfired.

As well as moving him into a 17-point championship lead, Hamilton's victory in Barcelona means a new record of converting 41 pole positions into race wins, surpassing Michael Schumacher, who did so on 40 occasions.
