Lewis Hamilton denies using "dirty tricks" in Abu Dhabi finale

Mercedes ace Lewis Hamilton stands firm over his decision not to speed up when repeatedly urged to do so by his team, claiming that he was simply sticking to the rules.

Lewis Hamilton has insisted that he 'did nothing unfair' when attempting to claim the Formula 1 world crown in the season-ending race.

The Mercedes driver was unhappy with team orders which repeatedly urged him to speed up so that teammate Nico Rosberg was not vulnerable to attack from the chasing pack.

Rosberg eventually finished in second place behind Hamilton at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, meaning a first title success for the German who later accused Hamilton of using "dirty tricks".

Despite the furore, Hamilton stood firm when questioned by reporters after the race and claimed that there was no reason for him to alter his speed in the closing stages.

"I did nothing dangerous so I don't feel I did anything unfair," he said. "We were fighting for the world championship. I was leading. I control the pace. That's the rules.

"I don't know why they didn't just let us race. There was never a moment I felt I was going to lose the race but it is quite clear their thought process."

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff would not say after the race whether Hamilton would face disciplinary action for disobeying team orders.
