In an unfortunate twist after McLaren's triumph at the British Grand Prix, the team’s technical director accidentally destroyed the winning constructors’ trophy - built entirely from Lego bricks - moments after the race.
The incident followed a light-hearted exchange between Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg, after the Sauber driver claimed a rare podium finish at Silverstone, only to receive a trophy made from Lego.
“How does it feel to finally stand on the podium after 15 years in Formula 1 and then receive a Lego trophy?” Piastri joked, directing his laughter toward the 37-year-old German.
“You can take your prize apart and probably buy it in the toy store next week.” Hulkenberg took the banter in stride, responding with good humour:
“I love Lego,” he said. “And now my little daughter can play with it too. “You have to look at it from the positive side, although a bit of silver or gold wouldn't have been bad either, but I'm not going to complain now.”
Even the trophy awarded to the winning constructor - McLaren - was crafted from thousands of Lego bricks, highlighting Formula 1’s new partnership with the iconic toy brand, but the durability of the prize was soon tested, as TZ newspaper in Munich reported that McLaren’s technical boss, Peter Prodromou, accidentally dropped and smashed the trophy behind the podium.
“Although it doesn't show exactly how the trophy breaks, the footage shows the already destroyed trophy of the winning constructor lying on the ground,” the report noted.
Lego had revealed that a total of 717 hours went into building the unique trophies for the event.
“It was so many hours and everything,” said Lego’s creative director Samuel Liltorp Johnson prior to the mishap, as quoted by The Sun. “I don’t think I can really put a price on the experience.”
