Diego Godin: 'Gonzalo Jara deserves Luis Suarez-type ban'

Uruguay defender Diego Godin says that Chile's Gonzalo Jara deserves similar punishment to Luis Suarez for sticking his finger up Edinson Cavani's backside.

Diego Godin has called on South America's governing body to slap Chile defender Gonzalo Jara with a Luis Suarez-type ban for what he did to Uruguay's Edinson Cavani.

Thursday's Copa America quarter-final clash descended into chaos when Cavani was sent off for lashing out at Jara, who stuck his finger into the striker's backside.

The Mainz 05 man has since found himself the subject of widespread condemnation for the gesture, which is now being investigated by Conmebol - the continent's governing body.

Last summer, Uruguayan Suarez was given a nine-game competitive international ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini, and his compatriot Godin says that Jara deserves a similar sanction.

"More than the verbal provocation that was clearly there, the unfortunate thing is where he shoves his finger," Godin told reporters.

"Everyone's seen what happened, there should be no need for me to spell out what he did. You know what happened. Edi doesn't hit him with his fist, it's just a push to his face with his hand.

"And the referee called him out on it. I hope Conmebol acts the way Fifa acted against Suarez last year. I do not know if there will be sanctions, I'm trying to bite my tongue, but hopefully there will be."

Chile won the match 1-0 courtesy of Mauricio Isla's goal, which took the host nation into the semi-finals.
