Stoke City boss Mark Hughes says that Mame Biram Diouf will continue at wing-back due to the 29-year-old's 'exceptional' form this season.

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has paid tribute to Mame Biram Diouf for his 'exceptional performances' at wing-back this season.

Diouf joined the Potters from Hannover in 2014 as a centre-forward, but has mainly operated as a defensive player at the Britannia Stadium.

The 29-year-old again impressed in a wing-back role against his former club Manchester United last weekend, and Hughes has revealed that he sees no reason to change the Senegal international's position in the team as things stand.

"He's a great guy with fantastic attitude to his work. He gets a bit frustrated he doesn't play down the middle but at the moment he's playing exceptionally well in his new role," Hughes told reporters.

"There's nothing to say he won't play there at some point this season but at the moment there is no reason to move him. We have a couple of players who have the flexibility to play in different positions, like Geoff Cameron, and that helps you during games when you can move people around and keep 11 on the pitch. We're delighted that Mame has committed to us."

Diouf signed a new three-year contract with Stoke earlier this week.
