Richard Foster aims to inspire next generation of St Johnstone stars

The former Aberdeen, Rangers and Ross County full-back has extended his contract for another year.

Richard Foster has pledged to act as a guiding hand for St Johnstone's young guns after extending his Perth deal for another year.

The former Aberdeen, Rangers and Ross County full-back will be two months shy of 35 when his Saints contract expires in May 2020.

But he believes he will have a crucial role to play alongside the likes of fellow veterans Liam Craig and Murray Davidson as they look to shape the junior members of Tommy Wright's squad.

Foster – who has made 94 appearances for the club since making the move in 2016 – told SaintsTV: "It always gets a bit nervous at this time of year when you are out of contract. You don't know what the future holds.

"Thankfully the manager wants to keep me for another year. For me, that's great.

"The season has been quite good. I think we've been unlucky in both cups getting Celtic each time.

"In the league, though, we have been doing really well.

"It's important in any team to have a good mixture of youth and experience. What we lack in experience we more than make up for it with raw talent going forward.

"The manager has added more attacking options and more pace to the team but we do have that blend of myself, Liam Craig, Murray Davidson – the older guys – and hopefully we can impart our experience onto the younger ones."
