The second semi-final in the Confederations Cup pitted Spain against Italy on Thursday.
It was the Italians that dominated the opening 45 minutes of football, but they passed up a number of clear-cut opportunities to enter the interval with a lead against the current European and world champions.
Both sides had opportunities in the second period, but neither could make the breakthrough as the last-four clash headed for extra time.
It took penalties to eventually separate the two sides, with Jesus Navas winning it for Spain with the decisive strike after Leonardo Bonucci had sent his effort over the crossbar.
