FIFA has charged the Republic of Ireland for using a symbol to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising on the players' shirts in March.

The players donned jerseys with the words Eire and Ireland and dates 1916 and 2016 embroidered in them during an international friendly with Switzerland on March 25.

The symbol aimed to pay tribute to the five-day Irish rebellion against the British rule, which resulted in 485 deaths.

FIFA has opted to take action against the Football Association of Ireland as the commemorative shirts breach rules which state that teams must not display symbols deemed to be political, religious or commercial.

It follows the row between FIFA, the English FA and Scottish FA over the use of poppy symbols to mark Armistice Day in their World Cup qualifier on November 11.
