Dani Ceballos could be set for a return to Real Betis as his future at Real Madrid looks increasingly uncertain.
Over the past two seasons, Ceballos has seen increased playing time at Real Madrid, largely due to injuries within the squad. However, his performances last term made it clear that the club may need to move on. Now, the former starlet has hinted at a potential return to Real Betis – the club that originally sold him to Madrid.
A product of the Betis youth academy, Ceballos was long regarded as one of the most talented players to emerge from the Seville-based side. He made his senior debut at 17 and had already featured in 105 matches for the first team by the time he joined Real Madrid in 2017. Back then, he was seen as a major star in the making.
Things did not go to plan in the Spanish capital. Ceballos struggled to establish himself at Madrid, and although his loan spell at Arsenal offered promise, it ultimately failed to deliver. He returned to Madrid in 2021, and after a bright campaign in 2022-23, last season was deeply underwhelming.
Ceballos no longer at Madrid level?
Despite getting regular minutes – more than perhaps expected – Ceballos’s game fell short. With key absences in defence, Carlo Ancelotti was forced to reshuffle his midfield. Federico Valverde filled in at right-back, Aurelien Tchouameni dropped into centre-back, and Ceballos was often deployed in midfield.
While he did his best, his displays raised questions about his ability to compete at the highest level. As a stop-gap option, he did not embarrass himself, but it became apparent he was not suited to a long-term role at Real Madrid. At 28, he remains a capable La Liga player, but perhaps no longer one for a club of Madrid’s stature.
Although his current deal runs until 2027, Ceballos has now openly suggested that he may be considering a move – possibly a return to Real Betis.“I still carry Real Betis in my heart and I hope the door is still open there,” Ceballos said. “We should sit down this week and discuss my future.”
A natural fit back at Betis?
Betis have had great success revitalising players seen as cast-offs elsewhere. Isco, discarded by Sevilla, revived his career and earned a national team recall. Adrian returned from Liverpool and reclaimed a starting spot. Even Antony, on loan from Manchester City, impressed.
Ceballos would be welcomed back as a homegrown talent with a wealth of experience – nearly 200 matches for Real Madrid and over 70 for Arsenal. A three-time Champions League winner, still in his prime, he could be a valuable addition to the squad.
From Madrid’s perspective, losing another midfield option – particularly with the club needing reinforcements in that area – only heightens the need for fresh additions.
