Los Blancos and the Blaugrana are thought to retain an interest in the French midfielder, despite him recently signing for Juventus on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.
Both La Liga giants had initially set their sights on Marco Verratti, but PSG appear unwilling to part with their star Italian, who Barca see as a perfect replacement for Sergio Busquets.
As a result, both have turned their attention elsewhere, and have settled on Rabiot, according to Don Balon.
The Frenchman's game-time in Turin has been limited so far, making just two Serie A starts to-date, and Barca believe they have a strong negotiating chip in Ivan Rakitic.
Real remain in the hunt, but also have other targets, including Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek.
