FIFA has announced that plans could be made to break up the domestic season less frequently for international football in the future.
The current system sees the campaign split into four breaks - a fortnight in each of September, October, November and March, while international games are also played once the club season is over.
A proposal has now been put forward to introduce longer breaks, likely lasting closer to three weeks, but on a less regular basis.
FIFA hopes to find the right balance between club and national team competitions, with the plans at the start of a consultation process.
The current system is fixed until 2024 unless stakeholders agree to a change.
