Newcastle United reportedly offer Birmingham City the chance to sign out-of-favour defender Grant Hanley.

Birmingham City have reportedly been given the opportunity to sign Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley.

Blues boss Harry Redknapp has recently voiced his frustration at being unable to build upon the four additions he has already made, but it appears that a new opportunity could present itself to the manager of the West Midlands outfit.

According to the Newcastle Chronicle, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is prepared to part ways with Hanley after he failed to make an impression at St James' Park.

Last summer, the North-East outfit paid Blackburn Rovers in the region of £5m to sign the centre-back, but the Scottish international went on to make just 10 appearances in the Championship.

Benitez is keen to free up funds, space and wages ahead of more work in the transfer market, and that could lead to Hanley being sold in the coming weeks.

Redknapp has already signed Barnsley centre-back Marc Roberts, but there are doubts over the future of fellow defender Ryan Shotton.
