Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Mexico could line up for Saturday's crucial World Cup clash with Group C rivals Argentina.

After grinding out a goalless draw with Poland in their World Cup opener, Mexico return to the fray in a high-stakes encounter with Group C rivals Argentina on Saturday.

Due to El Tri's lack of punch up front, coach Tata Martino - who will face his home nation this weekend - could be tempted to promote Raul Jimenez to the lineup in place of Henry Martin, who has scored just six times in 28 senior appearances for his country.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers striker, who has registered 29 goals at international level, made his first appearance since August in the Mexicans' final warm-up friendly and also played a part from the bench against opening-day opponents Poland in Qatar.

With Jesus Corona previously ruled out of the competition owing to injury, Alexis Vega and Napoli winger Hirving Lozano are set to remain the central striker's supporting cast from out wide.

La Seleccion mainstay Guillermo Ochoa celebrated his appearance at a fifth World Cup by saving Robert Lewandowski's penalty last time out, while fellow veteran Andres Guardado will hope to join him in achieving that feat at Lusail Stadium, after being consigned to the bench against Poland.

As Mexico prepare to co-host the next World Cup in 2026, a handful of fresh faces such as Pachuca midfielder Luis Chavez join two other members of the 100-cap club in an experienced squad: while Guardado could replace the former, Hector Herrera and Hector Moreno are set to start once again.

Barring a switch of setup, Ajax pair Edson Alvarez and Jorge Sanchez should also be retained in Martino's favoured 4-3-3 formation - in central midfield and at right-back respectively.

Mexico possible starting lineup: Ochoa; Sanchez, Montes, Moreno, Gallardo; Alvarez, Herrera, Guardado; Lozano, Martin, Vega
