Manchester United are reportedly contemplating a cut-price transfer swoop for Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo Mandava in the upcoming transfer window.

Manchester United are reportedly contemplating a cut-price transfer swoop for Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo Mandava in the upcoming transfer window.

The 30-year-old left-back from Mozambique began his professional football journey when he joined Benfica's academy in 2016 and remained on their books until 2019.

Mandava then joined Ligue 1 outfit Lille for around £2m before securing a move to Madrid in 2022. It is understood that he will enter the final year of his contract with the La Liga giants this summer.

Erik ten Hag has faced major difficulties in the left-back position this season, with Tyrell Malacia sidelined for the majority of the campaign and Luke Shaw grappling with recurring injuries.

Man United to prioritise new left-back in the summer

Mandava missed the first half of the 2023-24 season with Atletico Madrid due to an ACL injury he sustained in February last year and has struggled to nail down a starting role in Diego Simeone's side ever since.

Following his return from injury last November, Mandava has only made 15 appearances for Atletico and could potentially be available at a reduced price with his current contract entering the final 12 months.

According to The Sun, Man United are considering a move for the 30-year-old, who could be available for around £8m this summer.

However, the report adds that the Red Devils are not the only ones keeping tabs on the defender, with Aston Villa and Juventus believed to be interested in acquiring his services as well.

Historic Premier League move on the horizon for Mandava?

Under Sir Jim Ratcliffe's guidance, the Red Devils are expected to be busy in the upcoming transfer window, and bringing in a new defender is believed to be one of the team's highest priorities.

Should Mandava complete a move to Old Trafford, he would make history as the first player from Mozambique to compete in the Premier League.

The defender has scored once and provided one assist in his 69 appearances for Atletico Madrid across all competitions during his tenure. He has also earned 35 caps for his country and played at this year's Africa Cup of Nations.

Man United are currently in eighth place in the Premier League standings, 29 points behind league leaders Arsenal, who they will face on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford.
