Marcus Rashford makes it clear that Manchester United will close the gap between themselves and Manchester City and Liverpool next season.

Marcus Rashford has laid down the gauntlet to rivals Manchester City and Liverpool after seeing the pair claim major trophies last season.

Manchester United endured a miserable 2018-19 campaign during which they finished in sixth place on 66 points - their lowest tally since the David Moyes era.

City, on the other hand, claimed a second consecutive Premier League title, finishing 32 points ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, while Liverpool won their sixth Champions League trophy by beating Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.

When asked if the recent successes of Manchester City and Liverpool served as extra cause for motivation, Rashford told The Mirror: "For me, yeah. That just makes it an even bigger challenge to us.

"We never shy away from a challenge and we have to move forward as a team. The mood now is how it should be, everyone is positive. Last season wasn't good enough. But we're in much better condition then we were this time last year.

"For me it has always been a goal to get us back to where we should be. It wasn't a hard decision and we're all looking forward to it. I think we have to take it one game at a time. But for us we can't look too far ahead, we just have to concentrate on ourselves."

Rashford recently penned a new five-year contract at Old Trafford and will earn £200,000 a week after becoming a favourite of Solskjaer last season.

United have so far completed the signings of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in this window, and are now focused on securing a central midfielder before the window shuts.
