Rio Ferdinand says that Manchester United captain Harry Maguire 'will be disappointed' with his second-half display against Burnley.

Rio Ferdinand has said that Manchester United captain Harry Maguire 'will be disappointed' with his second-half display against Burnley in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils passed up the chance to secure all three points at Turf Moor, with Jay Rodriguez's effort early in the second period cancelling out a goal from Paul Pogba.

Maguire failed to deal with Wout Weghorst during the home side's leveller, while he was also booked for a rash challenge on Rodriguez, which could have been a red card.

Ferdinand has admitted that there have been too many below-par performances from the England international during the 2021-22 campaign.

"I think he'll be disappointed," Ferdinand told BT Sport. "In the first half he looked assured, him and Raphael Varane were very assured as a partnership. They were the dominating team, but in the second half the team didn't come out at the races.

"The goal was poor on Harry's part. Behind closed doors he will take responsibility for that, he doesn't need to come out here and go crazy, and he'll iron it out.

"The challenge he made just over the halfway line... he's lucky to stay on the pitch because I felt the striker was running in on goal. It's a performance he'll want to erase and get into the next game as quick as possible.

"But these things happen. This season, you've seen that [too many below-par performances]. I'm not sure if that's a hangover from the Euros, physically and mentally, I'm not sure. There hasn't been the consistency of a player you'd expect of that stature."

Maguire has made 24 appearances for the 20-time English champions during the 2021-22 campaign, starting their last two Premier League games against West Ham and Burnley.
