David May claims that Paul Pogba is currently too preoccupied by "off-field stuff" and must now knuckle down at Manchester United.

Manchester United treble-winning defender David May has told Paul Pogba to cut out his 'off-field antics' and instead focus on getting his career at Old Trafford back on track.

Pogba has struggled to hold down a starting spot in the Red Devils' starting lineup of late due to a mixture of injuries and a lack of form.

May is the latest United great to weigh in on the debate as to how Jose Mourinho can get the best out of his £89m man, insisting that it is now down to the player himself to find his top form.

"At times Pogba is a frightening player and on his day he's unplayable," he told 888Sport. "I just don't know if the off-field stuff gets in his way, his antics of getting his hair coloured every other day.

"Jose is trying to play him in his right position to get the best out of him and maybe he needs another holding midfielder to say 'right go on then, you go off and express yourself'.

"I do think that playing on the left side of a three is his best position and from there came his best performance which was at Everton away. Given time the team will be built around him. The manager is still four or five players away from getting where he wants to get to.

"He likes a big man up front and now he has Lukaku. He likes a holding midfielder and now he has Matic. I'm sure in the summer he'll go again and hopefully from that United can get closer to where [Manchester] City are."

Pogba netted his first goal in more than four months on Tuesday night as France beat Russia 3-1 in an international friendly.
