Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says that his side deserved their 1-0 win over local rivals Manchester City.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that the Red Devils were worthy winners in their League Cup derby after watching his side see off Manchester City 1-0.

The Portuguese coach declared that his players worked hard to bounce back from the weekend's 4-0 mauling at the hands of Chelsea and get a positive result against their local rivals.

"The players did everything and deserved to win. We are happy," BBC Sport quotes him as saying.

"In the last week everything went against us but we are professionals. The fans felt deeply such a negative result and today was a good chance to clear that feeling because a derby knockout and to win gives everyone a better feeling."

Juan Mata scored the only goal of the League Cup derby in the second half to fire United into the quarter-finals, where they will host West Ham United.
