How every Premier League season would have finished after gameweek 29: 2001-02

Given the current uncertainty over the resumption of the Premier League, Sports Mole looks at how the 2001-02 season would have ended after gameweek 29.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought the Premier League season to a standstill and it remains to be seen whether the campaign will conclude.

Top-flight clubs met last week to discuss the next steps going forward, with a return date of June 8 reportedly being proposed.

Should it take any longer for the green light to be given for football to resume, though, the season could possibly be brought to an early end.

Many teams therefore face an anxious wait over their final position, from Liverpool in top spot down to Norwich City at the foot of the table.

As talks between the powers-that-be continue behind the scenes, Sports Mole looks at what would have happened in years gone by had the Premier League season ended after 29 games.

The 2001-02 season turned into a title tussle between four teams, though Arsenal ultimately proved too strong for Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Had the campaign finished after matchweek 29, however, the Gunners would have ended as runners-up to United, whom they trailed by a point with a game in hand to play.

As it turned out, Arsene Wenger's men won each of their remaining matches, including a convincing win at Old Trafford on the penultimate weekend to secure top spot.

United could not even hold on to second, with Liverpool ending strongly to leapfrog their bitter rivals over the remaining couple of months of the season.

Newcastle completed the top four that year after maintaining their position of fourth over their last nine games, meaning a Champions League playoff spot.

Nothing changed in terms of the two UEFA Cup spots as Leeds United and Chelsea finished in fifth and sixth respectively, swapping positions between gameweek 29 and the end of the season.

At the bottom end of the division, meanwhile, Leicester City and Derby County were unable to save themselves in their remaining nine games, going down in 20th and 19th place.

Bolton Wanderers stepped up in the final stages of the season, however, climbing from 18th to 16th to stay in the top flight at the expense of Ipswich Town.
