Manchester City stormed into the quarter-finals of the Champions League this evening courtesy of a 7-0 hammering of Schalke 04 at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's side wrapped up a 10-2 aggregate victory with one of the most one-sided performances in Champions League knockout history, although it took until the 35th minute for them to break the deadlock.

Three goals in the space of less than eight minutes saw Man City dispel any remaining doubts about their place in the last eight, though, with Sergio Aguero scoring twice and Leroy Sane adding a third.

Further goals from Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus in the second half then outlined Man City's dominance as they sent out a statement to the rest of Europe.

Find out how all of the action unfolded courtesy of Sports Mole's minute-by-minute updates below.

10pmRight, that is all we have time for this evening!

Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for tonight's incredible match as Man City put Schalke to the sword on their way into the quarter-finals of the Champions League! I will leave you with our match report, and be sure to stick around for reaction too.

From me, though, it is goodbye for now!

9.58pmWell, it doesn't get much more emphatic than that at this stage of the Champions League!

Manchester City hit SEVEN past Schalke to cruise through to the quarter-finals courtesy of a 10-2 aggregate triumph, and that is a definite statement to the rest of Europe as to why City are favourites to go all the way in this competition!

90 minFULL TIME:  MANCHESTER CITY REACH THE QUARTER-FINALS OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!

90 minFULL TIME:  MANCHESTER CITY 7-0 SCHALKE (MAN CITY WIN 10-2 ON AGGREGATE)

88 minThere will apparently be no minutes of added time, which is a case of the referee putting Schalke out of their misery.

86 minUPDATE: Cristiano Ronaldo, take a bow. The big-game player has scored a hat-trick for Juventus to turn their tie against Atletico around and Juve now lead 3-2 on aggregate. This is Ronaldo's competition!

84 minGOAL!  Man City have a seventh as Schalke's horror show goes from bad to worse. Jesus whips in an effort from the edge of the box, but the keeper really should save this. Instead he lets it go through him and Man City go into double figures on aggregate!

84 minGOAL!  MANCHESTER CITY 7-0 SCHALKE (GABRIEL JESUS)

82 minI am struggling to think of a more emphatic victory at this stage of the Champions League. City have been utterly dominant, and it has been a little reminiscent of their 9-0 win over Burton earlier in the campaign. That is how one-sided it has been.

80 minSAVE!  Foden does almost get a second as he works space to shoot before putting plenty of power before his effort, but this time Fahrmann is there to parry it away.

79 minSCHALKE SUB: A third and final change for Schalke as Cedric Teuchert replaces Burgstaller.

78 minGOAL!  Sane is toying with his former club now! He jinks away from his man before poking a lovely ball through for Foden, who rounds the keeper and slides the ball into the empty net for his first European goal. There could well be more to come tonight too!

78 minGOAL!  MANCHESTER CITY 6-0 SCHALKE (PHIL FODEN)

76 minSchalke have been so, so poor tonight, it must be said. I cannot recall a shot on target all night.

74 minSCHALKE SUB: Another change for the visitors as Hamza Mendyl replaces McKennie.

72 minMAN CITY SUB: Man City now do not have a registered centre-back on the field as Fabian Delph replaces Laporte.

71 minGOAL!  Brilliant goal from City as they make it five with an incisive one-touch move. Sane, Foden and Zinchenko are all involved before the latter gives it back to Sane. The former Schalke man cuts the ball inside for Bernardo, who then picks out the bottom corner to get number eight on aggregate.

71 minGOAL!  MANCHESTER CITY 5-0 SCHALKE (BERNARDO SILVA)

69 minSCHALKE SUB: That will be Embolo's final action as he is replaced by Steven Skrzybski.

69 minYELLOW CARD!  Zinchenko barges into the back of Embolo and then barks at the referee to talk himself into a yellow card.

67 minSchalke would take the final whistle now, you feel. They very much look like a team in such trouble domestically and the manager will come under more pressure after this display tonight. They have been poor.

65 minMAN CITY SUBS: Time to save some players for the weekend - Aguero and David Silva depart to be replaced by Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden.

63 min

61 minHalf an hour remaining in this match now and the question is how many goals City will get. Schalke have been devoid of confidence from start to finish, but they have had absolutely no answer since Man City have really moved through the gears.

59 minThere will be more questions regarding VAR after this match, particularly considering how long it took to determine that the second goal was valid. It has been used a lot tonight and it has affected the spectacle a little.

57 minGOAL!  Sure enough the goal does stand, and this is a beauty. Sane sends a sensational pass into the box for Sterling, who races on to it and finishes it emphatically. The goal is initially ruled out, but VAR overturns it and City lead 7-2 on aggregate!

56 minGOAL!  MANCHESTER CITY 4-0 SCHALKE (RAHEEM STERLING) Another goal, another flag and another VAR check! This one will surely stand, though...

54 minDISALLOWED GOAL!  Time for some more VAR! Sane is played through on goal and rounds the keeper before sliding the ball into an empty net, but the offside flag is then raised and the video assistant will check it. He is quicker this time around and soon rules the goal out once and for all.

53 minUPDATE: Cristiano Ronaldo - who else - is dragging Juventus into contention for a quarter-final spot. He has just got his second against Atletico to level things up on aggregate.

51 minCHANCE!  Gundogan has been like a quarterback tonight. He pings a sumptuous pass over the top for Sane down the left and the winger fires his finish past the far post when he should have done better. The pass deserved more at the very least!

50 minIt looks like a really sore one for Danilo, who goes off to get some treatment on that eye injury. City are already using Danilo out of possession at centre-back, so they will give him every chance to return.

48 minYELLOW CARD!  Danilo picks up a delayed yellow card for a late challenge in midfield, although it is the Man City man who has come out worse off with a cut on his eyelid.

46 minKICKOFF:  Schalke get us back underway for the start of this second half!

9.02pmSchalke had actually defended quite well until Man City kicked it up a gear, and it looked as though they were biding their time and just trying to stay in the tie.

They have shown very little ambition, though, and now it appears to be just a matter of how many goals City will get. You can check out our match stats to see exactly how dominant City have been.

9pmGoal number three arrived just four minutes after the second goal went in - and one minute after it was finally confirmed - as Sane got in on the act against his former club.

Zinchenko played a fine pass down the left channel for the Germany international, who duly slid his finish past the keeper for a goal which looked far too easy for City.

8.58pmSergio Aguero got two of those goals in the space of just three minutes, the first of which came from the penalty spot as he chipped a Panenka down the middle after Bruma had bundled over Bernardo inside the area.

VAR backed the referee's decision on that one, but then took far too long to do the same on Aguero's second when the Argentine squeezed a shot through the legs of the keeper after good work from Gundogan and Sterling - the latter of whom had the question mark of offside which led to to the lengthy VAR review.

8.56pmThe first half comes to an end at the Etihad Stadium, and the tie is well and truly over too after a late blitz from Man City in that opening 45 minutes.

It took the hosts a while to get going, but they moved into a higher gear towards the end of the half to slice through Schalke with three goals in less than eight minutes.

45+2 minHALF TIME:  MANCHESTER CITY 3-0 SCHALKE (MAN CITY LEAD 6-2 ON AGGREGATE)

45+2 minCHANCE!  Lovely football from City as Danilo strides forward from defence and exchanges passes in Danilo, whose final ball sends Sterling into the middle. The in-form winger goes for goal, but it is straight at the keeper.

45+1 minThere will be two minutes of added time at the end of this first half.

44 minHere is that second Man City goal, including some lovely link-up play between Gundogan, Sterling and the goalscorer Aguero...

42 minGOAL!  This could get embarrassing for Schalke now. Zinchenko slides a pass down the left channel for Sane, who finds himself with only the keeper to beat and he duly slides it past Fahrmann for another goal against his former club.

42 minGOAL!  MANCHESTER CITY 3-0 SCHALKE (LEROY SANE)

41 min...and the goal stands! That took far, far too long to decide, though.

40 minStill VAR is checking it, and the fans are growing frustrated...

38 minGOAL!  It is a quickfire brace for Aguero as he makes it 5-2 on aggregate with a well-worked goal - and once again Gundogan is the chief creator with a chipped ball over for Sterling to chase.

Sterling holds off a defender before back-heeling it into the path of Aguero, who does really well to get it out of his feet and squeeze the ball through the legs of the keeper.

VAR is still checking it, though, and there is a longer delay than you might expect from a goal which looked pretty simple!

38 minGOAL!  MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 SCHALKE (SERGIO AGUERO)

38 minSHOT!  At the other end Stambouli is allowed the space to come forward, only to drag his 20-yard strike comfortably wide.

37 minCHANCE!  Aguero is in behind again here as he looks for a second in quick succession, collecting Gundogan's pass before working space to shoot. However, his eventual effort is tame and easy for the keeper to gather.

37 minIt was a clumsy one from Bruma for the penalty, but it was by no means a stone-waller and had it not been given then it would have been borderline whether VAR would have overturned that decision from the referee. You can certainly see why it was given, though.

35 minGOAL!  It's a cheeky one from Aguero as he dinks a Panenka down the middle to surely put this tie to bed once and for all, if it wasn't already.

35 minGOAL!  MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 SCHALKE (SERGIO AGUERO, PENALTY)

34 minThe penalty stands and Aguero will step up...

32 minPENALTY!  Manchester City are awarded a penalty as Bruma is adjudged to have fouled Bernardo when trying to defend a dangerous Gundogan pass into the box! This will be checked by VAR, but Bruma has also picked up a yellow card.

32 minGood play from Bentaleb to atone for his error as he gifts the ball to Sterling, leaving his defence exposed. However, he immediately charges after it and steals possession back for his side.

31 minZinchenko clips a free kick towards the back post, where Aguero has peeled away from his man and gets his head to the ball. However, he cannot get enough power on it as he tries to put it back across goal.

29 minUPDATE: It is very much game on in Turin as Juventus have pulled a goal back against Atletico Madrid through Cristiano Ronaldo. It is 2-1 to Atletico on aggregate there now.

27 minSchalke have begun to see a bit more of the ball in the last five minutes or so, but none of it is coming in particularly dangerous areas.

25 minGuardiola does not seem particularly happy on the touchline at the moment. He has spoken continually about the difficulty of this tournament and he knows that even a Schalke side in such poor form could hurt them if they are too far short of their usual best.

23 minWe're midway through the first half of this one and, to be honest, not a great deal has happened so far. Aguero has had the only chance and otherwise it has been a lot of City possession with not too much penetration.

21 minThe initial delivery comes to nothing, but Schalke keep the pressure on for a short while longer before the ball bounces behind for a goal kick.

20 minSchalke do make their first thrust forward of any note, and it leads to a corner...

18 minSomething needs to change if Schalke are to pull off a miraculous comeback tonight. They have barely had a kick so far and need to do more to upset City's rhythm if they are to stand a chance.

16 minMan City have the ball in the back of the net, but the whistle has already gone. A free kick was cleared up rather than out and Sterling just stepped across the keeper as he was going to claim it - no complaints with that decision.

14 minOFF THE POST!  Man City do break through the Schalke defence for the first time as Walker slides a pass inside the full-back for Sterling, who reaches the byline and cuts a low cross into the middle. Aguero gets in front of his man, but can only clip the outside of the post when he really should score. A big chance goes begging!

13 minMan City have had 70% of the ball so far, and in truth I'm surprised it isn't a higher figure. They are in complete control.

11 minNo chances to speak of so far in this match, but it has been one-way traffic in Man City's favour. Schalke have been solid in defence, but they can hardly get out of their own half and at this rate it looks only a matter of time before City break through.

9 minUPDATE: There is another last-16 tie taking place tonight, of course, and there has been a dramatic start to that match as Juventus - chasing a 2-0 deficit from the first leg - have already seen a goal disallowed. You can follow that one by clicking here.

7 minTo give an example of the size of the task Schalke are up against tonight - they will have to do something which has never before been done in this competition...

5 minIt is the Schalke fans making all the noise in the opening exchanges here, and they seem determined to enjoy themselves tonight regardless of what happens.

3 minAs expected, City have taken early control over the possession here. It is difficult for Schalke to know how to approach this game, but they will need to attack sooner or later as they need at least two goals tonight.

1 minDanilo is playing in an unfamiliar centre-back position tonight, but he has already stepped in with a fine challenge to beat Embolo to the ball and stop a developing Schalke attack. City go up the other end, but Sterling's cross is easy for the keeper to gather.

1 minKICKOFF:  Here we go, then! Manchester City get us underway at the Etihad!

7.59pmSCHALKE STARTING XI: Fahrmann; Stambouli, Bruma, Sane; Konoplyanka, McKennie, Bentaleb, Oczipka; Serdar; Embolo, Burgstaller
SUBS: Skrzybski, Nubel, Rudy, Mendyl, Teuchert, Matondo, Kutucu

7.57pmMAN CITY STARTING XI: Ederson; Walker, Danilo, Laporte, Zinchenko; Bernardo, Gundogan, D Silva; Sterling, Aguero, Sane
SUBS: Jesus, Humphreys, Music, Delph, Mahrez, Foden, Stones

7.55pmGood evening! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for tonight's Champions League last 16 second leg between Manchester City and Schalke 04 at the Etihad Stadium!

The hosts come into this match in complete control of the tie courtesy of their 3-2 victory in the first leg last month - a dramatic game which saw City give away two penalties, have a man sent off and still emerge victorious with two late goals. The two sides' form could not be more different coming into this match either, so it would be a major shock if City were to crash out this afternoon - although we have seen plenty of shocks already in this season's competition!

Kickoff is just five minutes away, so let's have a quick look at the team news before kickoff...
