Result: Lyon too hot for Marseille to handle

.

Lyon followed up their shock Champions League victory at Manchester City with a convincing 4-2 win against 10-man Marseille.

The visitors were hoping to move up to second in Ligue 1 with success in the Choc des Olympiques derby, but Lyon got their campaign back on track after some clinical finishing.

Houssem Aouar gave the home side the lead after 27 minutes with a cool finish but Marseille were level at the break thanks to Florian Thauvin's sixth goal in six league matches.

However, Bertrand Traore had a hand in all three second-half goals – scoring two in a nine-minute spell before earning a penalty for Nabil Fekir to convert.

Clinton N'Jie grabbed a consolation with 10 minutes left but Marseille, who also had Duje Caleta-Car dismissed late on, suffered their first defeat in four league matches.

The hosts were ahead when Tanguy Ndombele played a one-two with Traore and, after a lucky ricochet from Caleta-Car, the ball fell for Aouar to score.

Fekir fired a free-kick just over as the hosts cranked up the pressure before Memphis Depay spurned a golden chance to double home side's advantage on 38 minutes.

Lyon captain Fekir capitalised on some slack passing from the visiting defence to find the Holland international free in the area, but he could only put his left-footed effort high and wide from seven yards.

And Marseille instantly made the hosts pay when Pape Diop was dispossessed by Kevin Strootman just outside his own penalty area, which fell at the feet of Payet who played in Thauvin to slot home with a fine first-time effort.

The entertainment did not stop in the second half as Payet forced Lopes into a great save from range before Lyon regained the lead, courtesy of a piece of quality from Ndombele.

The 21-year-old midfielder picked out Traore with a terrific long-range pass, but the winger still had work to do before cutting inside and firing inside Pele's far post.

Former Celtic man Moussa Dembele came on for his home debut and within one minute of his arrival came Lyon's third goal.

The striker laid it back to Traore before playing a neat one-two with Fekir to get into the area, with his effort taking a huge deflection off Gustavo to wrongfoot Pele and squirm into the bottom corner.

And Traore was in the action once more as Marseille failed to deal with a corner and as the winger picked up the loose ball on the byline, he was fouled by Caleta-Car for a penalty – but only after a delayed VAR decision.

Fekir grabbed the goal his performance deserved, firing the spot-kick in off a post, before substitute N'Jie pulled one back with a great curling effort.

Caleta-Car was shown a straight red for a lunging tackle on Traore when through on goal to sum up a dismal night for Rudi Garcia's outfit.
