How Liverpool could line up against Leicester City

Sports Mole looks at how Liverpool could line up for their top-of-the-table clash with high-flying Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Boxing Day.

A bumper Boxing Day of Premier League action comes to an end with the top two facing off as Leicester City welcome leaders Liverpool to the King Power Stadium.

The match will be Liverpool's first back in the Premier League since being crowned world champions for the first time with victory over Flamengo at the Club World Cup in Qatar on Saturday.

The Reds saw their 10-point lead at the top of the table stay intact during their absence too, although they travel to a Leicester side unbeaten at home this season in what could be their toughest test of the campaign yet.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Jurgen Klopp could line his side up for the contest.

Out: Joel Matip (knee), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (ankle), Dejan Lovren (thigh), Fabinho (ankle), Nathaniel Clyne (knee)
Doubtful: Rhian Brewster (ankle)

Klopp is faced with the difficult decision of whether to stick or twist for this match, having fielded more or less a full-strength side in Qatar on Saturday.

A five-day turnaround is actually longer than the Reds have been used to for much of the season, though, and so despite the risk of travel weariness changes may be more likely against Wolverhampton Wanderers at home on Sunday.

One player who started the Club World Cup final but will definitely miss out in this match is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after he became the Reds' only injury casualty of the mini-tournament.

The England international suffered ankle ligament damage and, while the severity of the problem has not been fully confirmed, he will not play again before the turn of the year.

Fabinho and centre-back duo Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren are also not expected back in the closing stages of 2019, leaving Joe Gomez to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence once again.

There could be better injury news when it comes to Georginio Wijnaldum, though, with the Dutchman returning to the bench for the Club World Cup final and expected to be in contention for this match.

The front three could all start once again, although that depends on the level of rotation Klopp will go for, particularly with the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi and Adam Lallana having played their part throughout the busy December schedule so far.
