Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren says that he cannot understand why Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane was not flagged offside before winning a penalty at Anfield.

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has claimed that he does not understand the reason why Harry Kane was not flagged offside before winning a penalty for Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

During the closing stages of Sunday's Premier League fixture, Kane was brought down inside the penalty area by Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius, despite starting behind the home side's defence.

Kane was attempting to receive a pass from a teammate before Lovren miscued the ball into his path, with the laws of the game stating that the centre-back's intervention started a new phase of play.

However, despite Kane missing the resulting spot kick, Lovren has disputed the reasoning behind the decision of referee Jon Moss and assistant Eddie Smart.

The 28-year-old is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "He was already offside, so no matter what. I just don't understand these rules.

"I didn't touch it in the last moment. The ball was on the floor for 10 metres. He was offside."

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has praised assistant Moss, who later flagged for a foul by Virgil van Dijk on Erik Lamela inside the penalty area, an incident which was not witnessed by Moss.
