Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirms that captain Jordan Henderson suffered a hamstring injury during his side's 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Jordan Henderson suffered a hamstring injury during Wednesday night's dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Henderson limped off in the 71st minute of the match at Anfield, being replaced by James Milner as part of a triple change which also saw eventual match-winner Fabio Carvalho come on.

Klopp confirmed after the match that the decision to withdraw his skipper was not a tactical one, hinting that Henderson could now be set for a spell on the sidelines.

"Hendo is injured. He got a hamstring which is not helpful. It was that serious that he could not carry on. It was not a tactical change," Klopp told reporters.

Henderson will now undergo a scan to determine the severity of the problem ahead of Saturday's Merseyside derby against Everton.

The news adds to Liverpool's injury problems in midfield especially, with Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita also currently sidelined.

The Reds have been hampered by a number of injuries during the early stages of the campaign, with the likes of Ibrahima Konate, Diogo Jota and new signing Calvin Ramsay among those on the treatment table.

There have been growing calls for Liverpool to add another midfielder to their ranks before Thursday's 11pm transfer deadline and, while Klopp has refused to rule out a late signing, he has insisted that the club will only move if the right player becomes available.

Last season's runners-up made it back-to-back Premier League wins with their triumph over Newcastle as Carvalho fired home a 98th-minute winner.
