Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon claims that Michael Oliver "has a rubbish bin instead of a heart" after the English referee sent the Italian off at the Bernabeu.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has claimed that Michael Oliver "has a rubbish bin instead of a heart" after the English referee sent the Italian off in the latter stages of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

The quarter-final looked to be heading for extra time after the Serie A giants scored three times at the Bernabeu to level the aggregate score at 3-3.

Madrid were awarded a penalty in second-half stoppage time when Lucas Vazquez was felled by Juventus centre-back Medhi Benatia, however, and Cristiano Ronaldo found the top corner to send the holders through.

Buffon was awarded a red card for dissent as he seemed to push the referee after the spot kick was given, and the veteran goalkeeper has claimed that Oliver should have had "some sensitivity" to what has happening on the field.

"There must be some sensitivity to understanding the importance of some moments and if you do not have this sensitivity to what's going on in the game, you're not worthy of being on the pitch," Buffon told reporters.

"In this case, he should be in the stands with his parents, with his friends, with fries and Coca-Cola, and watch the game. You can not do something like that. This referee doesn't have a heart. He has a rubbish bin instead of a heart."

Madrid triumphed 4-3 on aggregate despite losing the second leg 3-1 in front of their own supporters.
