France and Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe apologises for missing the decisive spot kick to send his nation home in the shootout against Switzerland.

France forward Kylian Mbappe has apologised for missing the decisive spot kick against Switzerland on Monday, which meant that the World Champions exitted Euro 2020.

The Swiss replicated Croatia's 3-1 comeback against Spain a few hours earlier by scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes against Didier Deschamps's side to send the last-16 tie into extra-time.

However, a shock exit for the reigning World Cup winners was on the cards as Paris Saint-Germain's Mbappe stepped up to take the fifth penalty for France with the shootout at the sudden death stage.

Switzerland's goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved Mbappe's effort and eliminated France from the tournament, which the 22-year-old later apologised for on Instagram.

"I'm sorry about this penalty. I wanted to help the team but I failed. It's going to be hard to sleep after this, but unfortunately these are the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much," he wrote.

"The most important (thing) will be to get back up again even stronger for future commitments. Congratulations and good luck to the Swiss team."

Mbappe has received support from his manager Deschamps and teammate Hugo Lloris, as well as Brazilian icon Pele.
