Everton manager Rafael Benitez speaks following his side's 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa, and believes they could have achieved a different otcome.

Everton manager Rafael Benitez spoke after his side's 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, and the Spaniard found positives in the Toffees' performance.

The game remained goalless until the hour mark, but the hosts went on to net three goals in nine minutes, with Matty Cash and Leon Bailey getting on the scoresheet alongside a Lucas Digne own goal to quickly move out of reach.

That saw the Merseyside outfit's unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign put to an end, but Benitez believed the clash could have ended in a far better way for his side.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the manager said: "I think that we started the game quite well, we had a lot of situations on the counter in the first half and the final decision was not right. We had a couple of chances in the second half then conceded and again soon after. We started with too many problems but the team was fighting well.

"Salomon Rondon, Demarai Gray, Alex Iwobi, we had some situations where it could have been different. We made mistakes too soon, too early, too close and it was difficult to react. Hopefully we can manage that in the future."

The Toffees had several injury issues to deal with, as goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, captain Seamus Coleman and forward Richarlison all missed out alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin, forcing them into several late changes, and Benitez has put timelines in the region of two weeks on the return of the trio.
