Preview: Dundee vs. St Mirren - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Scottish Premiership clash between Dundee and St Mirren, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Mark McGhee will take charge of his first home game as Dundee boss when they face St Mirren at Dens Park on Wednesday.

St Mirren, who sit in seventh position in the Scottish Premiership, will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to nine matches in all competitions.

Dundee enter the midweek contest bottom of the pile in the Scottish Premiership, but they can take encouragement from their last two league outings.

After picking up an away win over Hearts, Dundee competed well against Celtic in McGhee's first game in the dugout for the Dee.

Danny Mullen gave Dundee the lead before Giorgos Giakoumakis scored two quick goals to give Celtic the advantage at half time, but Ryan Sweeney struck in the 60th minute to level the encounter.

However, with four minutes left to play, Giakoumakis netted his and Celtic's third goal of the game to ensure that McGhee's opening game in charge ended in defeat.

If Wednesday's hosts are to collect a positive result in midweek, then they will need to improve defensively after conceding 45 league goals this season - only Ross County (46) have conceded more.

St Mirren, meanwhile, saw their manager Jim Goodwin depart for Aberdeen on Saturday morning, with Jamie Langfield and Allan McManus put in interim charge.

Despite the change in the dugout, the Buddies extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 1-1 away draw against Livingston on Saturday.

Bruce Anderson gave the hosts the lead in the 55th minute before Greg Kiltie scored his first league goal of the season to ensure that St Mirren went home with a point.

As a result of the draw, the Buddies have now collected 14 points from their last six matches, with only Celtic picking up more in that period.

Wednesday's visitors have fared well on the road this season with 17 away points giving them the third-best away record in the Scottish Premiership.

Team News

Dundee are set to be without Lee Ashcroft and Cillian Sheridan due to injury issues.

Meanwhile, Vontae Daley-Campbell came into the starting lineup against Celtic after returning from suspension, and he is set to keep his place in the side for Wednesday's contest.

After scoring in consecutive league games, Mullen will be one of Dundee's main goal threats, when he starts upfront at Dens Park.

As for the visitors, they are unable to call upon the services of Eamonn Brophy, who is out with an ankle problem.

St Mirren will be forced into a change in defence after Charles Dunne was sent off in Saturday's meeting with Livingston.

With Dunne suspended, Conor McCarthy is expected to come into the backline to partner Joe Shaughnessy in the centre of defence.

Dundee possible starting lineup:
Lawlor; Rossi, McGhee, Sweeney; Daley-Campbell, Anderson, Byrne, Mulligan, Kerr; Mullen, McMullan

St Mirren possible starting lineup:
Alnwick; Fraser, Shaughnessy, Dunne, Tait; Power, Gogic, Ronan; Kiltie, Jones, Greive

We say: Dundee 1-2 St Mirren

Although Dundee have shown signs of improvement in recent games, we think that they will fall short on Wednesday when they face a St Mirren side that are currently enjoying a rich vein of form.
