The visitors made a strong start to the match, with Andre Schurrle coming close to an opening goal in the first five minutes when Cesc Fabregas picked him out with a through-ball, but his finish was just wide.

Burnley took the lead against the run of play with less than quarter of an hour gone when Scott Arfield hit a crossed ball on the half-volley to find the top corner, beating Thibaut Courtois on his Premier League debut.

It took Jose Mourinho's side just three minutes to get back on level terms as the hosts failed to clear, allowing Diego Costa to drill the ball in for his first goal in the division.

Chelsea took the lead just a few minutes later when Eden Hazard burst forward before finding Fabregas, who set up Schurrle for a low finish into the bottom corner.

A corner allowed the visitors to extend their lead further later in the first half with Branislav Ivanovic losing his marker before volleying the ball home.

Danny Ings tried to halve the deficit for Burnley just before the break, but his flicked finish failed to find the target.

Sean Dyche's side made a bright start to the second half as Arfield came close to adding his second just four minutes after the restart, but Courtois tipped the ball away at full stretch.

Schurrle looked to add his second from a free kick shortly after, but the German's curling effort was well high of the crossbar.

The home side did not give up, as Lukas Jutkiewicz came close to pulling one back with just over an hour played, drilling a powerful effort wide of the target.

Chances for both sides were scarce in the final 20 minutes, but the away supporters were given something to cheer about when Mourinho brought Didier Drogba on for his second Chelsea debut with six minutes still to play.

The Ivorian tried to extend the visitors' lead with a half-volley from just outside the box late on, but his swerving effort curled wide, leaving Chelsea with a two-goal margin at the full-time whistle, which leaves them at the top of the Premier League table.
