Josh Brownhill earns Bristol City a surprise 1-0 win away to Brighton & Hove Albion, meaning that the Championship title race will go down to the final game.

The Championship title race will go down to the final game of the season after Brighton & Hove Albion slipped to a potentially costly 1-0 defeat at home to lowly Bristol City.

All that was required for the Seagulls was another three points on home soil, but a second successive defeat - a week on from going down to Norwich City - means that Newcastle United can still overtake them at the top.

Josh Brownhill headed home the only goal of the game shortly before half time to give his side just a second away win in 18 attempts, also making them mathematically safe from the drop heading into the final round of fixtures.

A wayward Glenn Murray strike early on offered a sign of what was to come for Brighton, who had to wait until the half-hour mark for their next meaningful effort as Jiri Skalak was kept out by Frankie Fielding.

Brownhill then pounced at the end of the opening 45 minutes, converting past David Stockdale from close range after the ball arrived in the box from the right-hand flank.

A record Amex Stadium crowd of 30,338 saw Albion head a couple of openings wide of target in the second half, as they looked to muster a response and get over the line to add the title to their promotion success.

Lewis Dunk fired wide from a shot on the edge of the box eight minutes from time, while Solly March was unable to test Fielding after cutting inside and taking range.

Bristol looked the more likely to add to their lead in the closing stages, though, with both Bobby Reid and Callum Patterson forcing big saves out of Stockdale, meaning a rare win over the Seagulls for Lee Johnson's side.

Brighton head to Aston Villa on the final day with a one-point lead over Newcastle, who take on Barnsley at St James' Park at the same time.
