Swansea City manager Paul Clement admits that he 'feels for' Renato Sanches following the Bayern Munich loanee's slow start to life in the Premier League.

Paul Clement has insisted that Swansea City fans will eventually see the best of Renato Sanches after the young loanee produced a woeful display against Chelsea.

Portugal international Sanches has yet to provide a goal or assist in eight Premier League matches since arriving from Bayern Munich in the summer.

Wednesday evening's Stamford Bridge performance was arguably the most disappointing yet for the 20-year-old, with Clement deciding to take him off 45 minutes into the eventual 1-0 defeat.

Speaking to reporters after the match, however, the Swansea boss claimed that he will continue to show patience in an attempt to get the best out of the midfielder.

"He had a poor half. I feel for him because he is a very talented player and I don't think in any of the games this year he has shown the talent that he has," Clement said. "It goes without saying that if you go from Benfica to Bayern Munich and you win a European Championships with Portugal and you play in games in the latter stages of the competition then you are a very good player.

"He is a player who is struggling for confidence and is struggling for form. We believe we are the right environment to get him out of that. I am behind him, the technical staff are behind him and his team-mates are behind him. We hope that he is going to make the right steps that are needed.

"I think he has got to start with the basics and get the simple things right. At the moment I am seeing games where he is trying very difficult things but today you see him misplacing lots of simple passes. His confidence is very low. He wants it very badly. I mean, Monday to Friday he is working, working and working. It is just not happening for him in games at the moment."

Sanches's arrival at the Liberty Stadium in the summer was seen as a major coup for the Welsh outfit, with a number of high-profile sides across the continent reportedly showing an interest at the time.
