Fifth-place Villarreal welcomed third-place Barcelona to the newly-named Estadio de la Ceramica in La Liga on Sunday night.
Both teams had chances in what was an open and entertaining first 45 minutes, but neither could make the breakthrough as the pair entered the half-time break on terms.
Villarreal took the lead early in the second period through Nicola Sansone, but Barcelona secured a share of the spoils in the final minute when Lionel Messi found the top corner from a free kick.
