Newcastle United narrowly beat Arsenal to be named the biggest overachievers of the 2022-23 Premier League season in the annual Sports MoleReaders' Awards.

Newcastle United have been named the biggest overachievers of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign in the annual Sports Mole Readers' Awards.

The Magpies vastly improved on an 11th-placed finish last season to come fourth this time around, earning a return to the Champions League for the first time in almost 20 years in the process.

Eddie Howe's men finished above the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea to upset the recent established elite in English football, offering promising signs to come following their takeover by Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle earned 31.9% of your votes for the biggest overachiever in our end-of-season awards, narrowly finishing ahead of Arsenal, who garnered 31%.

Mikel Arteta's side launched an unexpected title bid and led the way for no fewer than 248 days over the course of the campaign before being overtaken by Manchester City towards the end of the season.

In doing so, Arsenal broke an unwanted Premier League record for the longest time at the top of the table without winning the title, but their second-placed finish was still a marked improvement on last year's fifth place.

Brighton & Hove Albion, who finished sixth to qualify for Europe for the first time in their history, took 23.9% of the votes to complete the podium.
