AC Milan and Inter Milan may be forced to scrap their current plans for a new stadium to replace the existing San Siro.

The two clubs proposed the construction of a new 60,000 seat stadium in place of the historic ground, which opened in 1926, that would be ready for the start of the 2022-23 season.

Plans for the extravagant new stadium were leaked in September, with plans in place for an ornate glass exterior designed to mirror one of Milan's most famous cathedrals.

However, reports in Italy now indicate that those plans may have to be put on the back burner following a recent meeting with the local council.

Inter's CEO Alessandro Antonello has said that both clubs will need to propose some new ideas, including proposals for renovating the San Siro.

Meanwhile, AC Milan's president Pablo Scaroni has suggested that they could build the new stadium alongside the San Siro, although he did also acknowledge that there were issues with the current plans.
