Sky Documentaries commissions a one-off film exploring the failed European Super League project.

Sky Documentaries has commissioned a one-off film about the failed endeavour to launch the European Super League earlier this year.

The highly-controversial and widely-derided plot saw 12 of Europe's most elite clubs - including six from the Premier League - devise a plan to compete in a closed annual tournament with the guarantee that they would never be relegated.

A huge fan backlash saw the plans crumble amid much embarrassment within days, although the league technically still exists and is taking its case to the European Court of Justice.

The 90-minute programme for Sky promises to give viewers "an exclusive inside look" at the project's formation and demise, with interviews from key figures within the clubs concerned.

The documentary is being put together by Fulwell 73, responsible for shows such as The Class of 92, Sunderland 'Til I Die and I Am Bolt.

Poppy Dixon, Sky's director of documentaries, said: "The announcement and disbanding of the European Super League became one of the most volatile 72 hours in football history.

"Football fans and non-fans alike debated, protested and trended this game-changing decision around the world before watching its rapid collapse.

"When Fulwell pitched us the film as a high stakes thriller with exclusive access from inside the story, we knew this would be a brilliant fit for Sky Documentaries."

The film is expected to air on the channel later this year.
