The reboot of Saved By The Bell is cancelled after two seasons.

The reboot of Saved By The Bell has been axed by Peacock after just two seasons, it has been announced.

The comedy reunited some cast members from the original series, including Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley, and introduced a new generation of pupils at Bayside High.

Despite the show's critical acclaim, however, Peacock announced on Wednesday that it would not be proceeding with a third season.

"We are so proud to have been the home of the next iteration of Saved by the Bell for both new and OG fans," a spokesperson said.

"Saved by the Bell has been a cultural mainstay for more than 30 years and the new series, led by Tracey Wigfield's superfan enthusiasm and signature witty humor, seamlessly continued the show's legacy, all while allowing more audiences to feel seen."

After the news broke, Gosselaar tweeted: "So disappointed by this news. So many talented individuals in all departments creating something original from a reboot.

"Respect and admiration to everyone involved and thanks to the viewers."

The second season had concluded with a cliffhanger of sorts, with suggestions that Lopez's Slater and Berkley's Jessie could rekindle their high-school romance.
