Mark-Paul Gosselaar expresses regret about donning a Native American headdress for an old Saved By The Bell episode.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar has admitted that he "cringed" when he watched back an old episode of Saved By The Bell which saw his character Zack Morris don a Native American headdress.

In the season two episode 'Running Zack' - first broadcast in November 1990 - Zack gives a class presentation about his family's heritage, learning that one of his ancestors was a Native American chief called Whispering Wind.

Talking to the Zack To The Future podcast, Gosselaar recalled: "I cringed seeing myself portraying a white dude being Zack Morris, who is like the all-American, blonde-haired white dude in an Indian Native American headdress.

"This is one of those that I don't.... I don't remember putting on the headdress. I don't remember putting face paint on. I don't remember standing in that awkward way that I was standing where my arms are folded in like a very stereotypical way."

He added: "We're much more sensitive now, for good reason, that those things would not happen today. Like, this episode would never get made in current times, and rightly so."

Gosselaar recently reprised his role of Zack for the Saved By The Bell reboot on streaming service Peacock.
