Mo Gilligan has emerged as a surprise contender to take over from James Corden as host of The Late Late Show on CBS in the US.

Earlier this year Corden confirmed that he would be stepping down from the role next spring, after eight years, in order to return to the UK and spend more time with his family.

Gilligan has become one of the most recognisable faces on the small screen in the UK over the last few years, hosting his own Channel 4 show, the Brit Awards and The Big Breakfast, while also appearing as a judge on ITV's ratings hit The Masked Singer.

The 34-year-old also has a burgeoning career in the US, recently moving to Los Angeles, and The Sun says that he is now a serious contender for the major gig on CBS.

"TV execs can't get enough of Mo," a source said. "They appreciate that, like James when he first started, Mo's currently not a household name in the US but he's got the potential to be.

"A shortlist of replacements for James is being drawn up and Mo is at the top of the list."

Corden's replacement is expected to be announced in the coming months ahead of the new show starting in September 2023.
