Producers of this year's Oscars insist that the ceremony will be held in person and rule out nominees attending virtually.

The organisers of the Oscars have confirmed that this year's ceremony will be an in-person event, ruling out the option of nominees attending virtually.

Most awards ceremonies over the last year have taken place remotely to some extent due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the most prestigious ceremony on the calendar has ruled out such a compromise.

The 93rd Academy Awards are taking place two months later than originally planned - on Sunday, April 25 - at the new venue of Grand Union Station in Los Angeles.

In an email to nominees, producers said that enhanced safety measures will be in place at the ceremony, including an on-site coronavirus health team as well as rapid testing facilities.

"We are going to great lengths to provide a safe and enjoyable evening for all of you in person," they wrote, "as well as for all the millions of film fans around the world, and we feel the virtual thing will diminish those efforts."

The nominees for this year's ceremony were announced earlier this week, with Mank - a movie about the making of Citizen Kane - leading the way with 10 nominations.
