New Scream directors explain film's title
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett explain why the fifth Scream movie is called simply Scream.

New Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have explained why the new film in the franchise is called simply Scream.

The upcoming fifth movie was expected to have a subtitle or be called Scream 5 but instead has the same title as the original 1996 movie, directed by the late Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson.

Talking to Empire magazine, Bettinelli-Olpin said: "It's about paying respect and letting people know we're honouring everything the series is with this movie.

"The world that Wes and Kevin built, it's a big universe. This movie is an encapsulation of all that.

"It felt like the best way to honour that was to show people, 'Yep, it's the Scream that you know and love, and it's going to be something else moving forward.' This movie is a love letter in every way."

Scream is scheduled for release on January 14, 2022.
