David Gillespie reprises his role as Duncan Boyd on EastEnders after almost 34 years away.

David Gillespie is rejoining EastEnders for a short stint after almost 34 years away, it has been announced.

The actor played the part of Duncan Boyd, who worked at the local church from 1987 and became romantically involved with Sharon (Letitia Dean).

The pair even got engaged but their relationship came to an end in 1989 when Duncan was offered a new job in Wiltshire and Sharon called off their nuptials.

Duncan will reappear in the Square later this month to officiate the christening of baby Albie and is stunned to learn that Sharon is the boy's mother.

"I have to say what a pleasure it was being back in EastEnders reviving my role as Duncan after over 30 years of leaving the show – a little strange at first but 'nice strange'," said Gillespie.

"The only people I knew were my old mates Letitia and Gillian (Taylforth) but I was made to feel instantly at home by such a wonderful cast and great crew – lots of new friends. Fabulous!"

Exec producer Chris Clenshaw added: "It's wonderful to welcome David back to the role of Duncan Boyd.

"Although we haven't seen Duncan for over three decades, his character shares a romantic history with one of the show's iconic matriarchs, Sharon. We're delighted to have him back for a short while as he unknowingly stirs up drama between the happy couple."

EastEnders continues Mondays to Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One and from 6am on iPlayer.
