Classic Doctor Who monsters the Sea Devils will reportedly be the subject of their own spinoff series.
The show has a new lease of life thanks to a landmark investment deal between the BBC and Disney+ which has significantly increased its budget and allowed for a Marvel Universe-style expansion of spinoff shows under returning showrunner Russell T Davies.
Multiple spinoffs have been mooted, including one focusing on UNIT and another featuring Eighth Doctor Paul McGann, but The Mirror reports that the first one to go ahead will be about the Sea Devils.
First introduced to the show in 1971, the reptilian creatures were the original habitants of Earth who went into suspended animation but found themselves in conflict with humans when they reawoke.
The newspaper says that a five-part spinoff called The War Between The Land and the Sea has been developed and will begin filming this spring.
"Doctor Who fans love the monsters and The War Between The Land and the Sea will hopefully give viewers something new and different to enjoy," a source told the newspaper.
"The Sea Devils and their cousins, the Silurians, have both featured in 21st-century Doctor Who, so modern audiences are familiar with them too."
The main series continues with the second of its third special episodes to mark the show's 60th anniversary on Saturday.
