Sky News announces details of several new shows for its evening schedule.

Sky News has announced details of a host of new programmes as it looks to shakeup its primetime schedule.

Over the last year the long-running news channel has begun to introduce bespoke shows - rather than just rolling news - into its lineup amid increased competition from GB News and the forthcoming TalkTV channel from Rupert Murdoch.

Sky previously announced a new interview show with political editor Beth Rigby, which is confirmed to start on March 10, while Trevor Phillips will return for a second series of discussion show The Great Debate on February 7.

Phillips will also host a new programme, Common Ground, on Tuesday nights from March that will see two opponents go head to head debating a major issue in the hopes of finding areas of agreement.

Sunday morning host Sophy Ridge will return from maternity leave in mid-March and will also host a new Wednesday night show, The Take with Sophy Ridge, which promises to offer a mid-week look at the major issues in Westminster.

"Sky News prides itself on its impartial journalism," said John Ryley, head of Sky News. "We see it as our responsibility to present our viewers with dynamic, engaging and balanced programming, offering clarity in an uncertain world.

"These new programmes are designed to highlight the lively debate, discussion and opinion that is a vital part of the Sky News brand.

"From holding politicians to account to hearing directly from the people at the heart of the stories, our news organisation puts the British public at the heart of what we do."

According to the latest BARB figures, Sky News currently averages an audience share of 0.9%, compared to BBC News channel's 1.64% and GB News' 0.18%.

Four-week average share for period ending January 2, 2022
