India will monitor the progress of Shikhar Dhawan after reports emerged of the opening batsman suffering a hairline fracture on his left thumb.

Dhawan underpinned India's 36-run World Cup victory over Australia at the weekend with a magnificent 117 off 109 deliveries at the Oval.

However, he took a blow to his hand from a Pat Cummins delivery early into his innings and did not field during Australia's reply.

And India are now sweating on the fitness of one of their star performers ahead of Thursday's clash with New Zealand at Trent Bridge and Sunday's showdown against Pakistan at Old Trafford.

A brief statement on the Board of Control for Cricket in India's Twitter account read: "Team India opening batsman Mr Shikhar Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team.

"The team management has decided that Mr Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored."
